Following on from the story of assessing the weight of an ox, the competition referred to has extensive requirements. Apart from the logistics of recording guesses, paying for tickets, awarding of prizes etc, there is a need for weighing equipment, a lot of cleaning up and the death of a fine ox.
What if the competition were to be reframed? Rather than taking the weight of the dressed ox as the correct answer and then seeing who was nearest, define the correct answer as the median guess and then award the prize to the holder(s) of the median guess(es).
The Ox would not need to be killed. Indeed, even a photograph may be sufficient. Indeed, there need not ever have been a real ox.
